A Day in Chicago

7.26.2017

Travel Guide - 24 Hours in Chicago

Ideally we’d have plenty of time in every city we visit to explore all the wonderful things that it has to offer. However, sometimes that’s just not possible. When you’re lucky enough to have a few hours in a new city, you take advantage of every second. So when we booked our recent trip back home to Wisconsin, we decided to fly in and out of Chicago so we could spend some time there on the way back. We arrived in Chicago on a Sunday evening and left the next day in the early afternoon. In the meantime, I think we got in a lot of adventure. Here are my suggestions for your quick layover in Chicago.

Where to Stay

Somewhere near the Magnificent Mile. I found a great deal at the Fairfield Inn & Suites on East Ontario Street. It was the perfect location for us, we were able to walk to almost everything we did shown below. We took one Uber during the whole trip. One thing to note for all hotels: If you have a car, figure in the price of parking as well, as it’s quite expensive to park in downtown Chicago! The Fairfield has a free breakfast, which was something we considered when finding a good price.

A Day in Chicago - The River

See the Chicago River (especially if you visit over St. Patrick’s Day)

Make sure you take a walk over the Chicago River. Personally, I think the best views of the river come from the bridge on Michigan Ave., but there are plenty to choose from (photo above, Michigan Ave., photo below, N. Wabash Ave.). However, you can easily knock out two birds with one stone by using the Michigan Ave. bridge so you can stroll down Michigan Ave. as well. Lots of shopping and fun people watching.

A Day in Chicago - The City

A Day in Chicago - Grant Park

Grant Park

This is Chicago’s version of Central Park, although total judgement here: I think Grant Park is much better than Central Park. They’ve spent quite a lot of time/money renovating this park in recent years, and the results are stunning. From winding bridges to rock walls for kids, you’ll definitely be able to spend a lot of time here. You will also find The Bean and Buckingham Fountain here.

A Day in Chicago - The Bean 2

The Bean

It needs no introduction. Hope for a cool sky day to get neat photos. And then try to take just one. It’s like popping a can of Pringles. You can’t have just one. Here’s a task: See if you can get less than 50 other people in your photo. Good luck.

A Day in Chicago - Where to Get Deep Dish Pizza - Gino's East

Chicago Deep Dish Pizza

You can’t visit Chicago without eating some deep dish. I did my research beforehand to find the “go-to” pizza palace. My parents used to live in Chicago, so because I respect my elders, I took their advice and went to Gino’s East. That, and I know they know great food. If I had more time, I’d have no problem taste-testing all the pizza places to find the best one. You know, because I can’t trust everyone, even if they are family. Calories don’t count when you’re on vacation anyway.

Gino’s Pizza was perfect. The restaurant is an experience in itself: the interior is fun and unique, and the pizza was delicious! Be prepared to spend some time at any deep dish place you visit, remember it takes quite a bit longer to cook!

A Day in Chicago - Navy Pier

Navy Pier

You could spend a whole day at the Pier if you wanted, but you’ve gotta at least take a walk out to the end if you only have a few hours. Especially if you love people watching as much as we do.

I’d also recommend not being pregnant during this walk. From the beer gardens at the end of the pier, to fun bars every few feet, you miss out on a lot. Like the tropical goat at the Billy Goat Tavern. My husband was nice enough to drink it for me while I wiped drool from my mouth.

A Day in Chicago - Soldier Field

Soldier Field.

Personally, I’d keep this one off my list (Go Packers!), but for my husband it was a must-see. And to be honest, it fits very will into the day as it’s located right across from the Field Museum and the Shedd Aquarium. We took an Uber from Navy Pier to Soldier Field, and then walked back towards the city. We stopped to take photos in front of the Shedd, but didn’t have enough time to explore inside. If you have more time, it’s a must-see as well.

I’d much rather have visited Wrigley Field, but with only a few hours in the city, it was too far out of the way. I’d add that to my list for next time!

A Day in Chicago - Shedd Aquarium

A Day in Chicago - Grant Park, Buckingham Fountain

Buckingham Fountain (The Married with Children fountain)

Not only is it a famous Chicago landmark, but it’s also beautiful and the perfect photo op. It’s a lot larger in person than you’d expect, and the views behind it are spectacular.

A Day in Chicago - Billy Goat Tavern

The Billy Goat Tavern

Last, but certainly not least, you MUST stop at the Billy Goat for a cheeseburger. This place got it’s celebrity from Saturday Night Live’s “Cheeseburger Cheeseburger” skit, but it’s more than just celebrity that make it worth your visit. First of all, it’s located under the city, how cool is that? Second of all, the cheeseburgers are so delicious (and the pickles! oh my!). It’s pretty cheap for a great burger and the experience is a must. Find the steps down to the ‘second city’ on Michigan Ave., directly across the street from the Tribune Tower.

*Don’t have time to find the underground city? You can get a cheeseburger at the Billy Goat at Navy Pier. You just lose the experience of visiting the original.

Overall, there are a million more things to do in Chicago, but we left with satisfaction of a day filled with great experiences.

Printable Motivation Cards

7.19.2017

Printable Motivation Cards

Hello Gorgeous! You’re looking good today. Thank you for visiting my blog.

If my feeble attempt at complimenting you put a smile on your face, then you’re in the right place. Because we all love to be complimented right? It can’t be just me. The only thing I struggle with is how to respond. I know you’re supposed to smile and say thank you, but let’s be honest, sometimes compliments are hard to accept. So I’ve come up with an idea on how to change that.

DIY Printable Motivation Cards

I created these printable motivation cards for just that reason. You can leave them anonymously for friends, co-workers, random people at the supermarket (and don’t think I haven’t done that, because I definitely have). Thus, the awkward “compliment acceptance” is gone. Poof!

Printable Motivation Cards Rae of Sparkles

You can leave them at the store, in new purses or pockets of new clothes. You can leave them with your signed credit card receipt at the new restaurant you were dying to try. You can leave them on people’s car windows. At this point, the opportunities are endless.

Printable Motivation Cards

And if all else fails, I’m sure your spouse will enjoy getting into their car with a little note of love. At least my husband pretends to.

Kisses for My Favorite Firecracker

6.29.2017

Fourth of July Party Favors Cute 4th of July gifts

In our house, the holidays come and go with lots of decorations. They also typically come with treats. And if my husband liked candy, there would be a lot more of it in our place during the holidays. Sadly, I have to make treats for my friends and co-workers instead, since he won’t eat any of it. This July 4th I am particularly trying to entice him with candy and treats. In other words: fatten him up. He’s going on a Bachelor party trip to Cabo in a few weeks, he doesn’t need to pack all six abs does he? I mean, I’ll let him take one or two, but the rest can be filled in with pizza and cookies.

4th of July Party Favors

While cruising the candy aisles at my local Dollar Tree, in an attempt to bring home something that would wet his whistle, I got a tad side-tracked and found myself standing in the July 4th aisle instead. Of course, these tiny tin buckets stood out to me. I mean, they’re adorable. They’re tiny, they’re patriotic, and they can be filled with candy! Joy!

July 4th Party Favor Gift Idea

I picked up some patriotic Hershey kisses to fill my mini buckets with, printed my tags, and used some wire twine to tie the tags to each bucket. If they weren’t cute before, they’re definitely cute now. If my husband won’t appreciate them (honey, there’s only 22 calories in each Kiss), then my friends and co-workers will just get lucky with a holiday treat.

Taste the Rainbow

6.13.2017

Taste the Rainbow DIY Gift

My whole life I’ve had a thing for the colors of the rainbow. Not rainbows per say, but the good ol’ fashioned Roy G. Biv (for those of you non-nerds, that stands for the colors of the rainbow). In my college days I had decorations in rainbow colors all over the house. When people that I didn’t know well found out I had a boyfriend instead of a girlfriend, well let’s just say they were a little surprised.

DIY Gift - Taste the Rainbow

Whenever I see projects with the colors of the rainbow, I want to try them immediately. I saw something similar to this, but with regular sized vodka bottles. I mean, I love my friends and everything but who do you think I am? I’ll tell you who I’m not: Mrs. Moneybags. So mini-bottles are what you’re gonna get, and you’re gonna love it.

DIY Gift Idea - Taste the Rainbow

I found five different colors (flavors) of mini vodkas, bought 12oz of Skittles, and bought a little tray from the Dollar Tree. I printed the pictured printable and tied it to the tray with red twine. Since it just so happens to be Gay Pride month (and I live in the Bay Area), this project was perfect timing.

When I became a stay at home mom, I thought it wou When I became a stay at home mom, I thought it would only be for a year at most. But as it turned out, I was lucky to be able to make it last as long as it has. What no one ever tells you though about becoming a SAHM, is that your whole identity can get wrapped up in being a mom. And for some women, that’s not a good thing. But for me, it’s a phenomenal thing. It’s an incredible time in my life that I wouldn’t trade for anything. That doesn’t mean I’m not exhausted or irritated at all, it just means I’ll take all of the negatives because the positive completely outweighs it for me.

This should go without saying, that if you AREN’T satisfied with just being a mom, that’s okay too. For some women, having something else that is THEIRS makes them a better mom. And more power to you!

Back when I was growing up (wayyyyyyy back then), Back when I was growing up (wayyyyyyy back then), it seemed like most people grew up around their extended families. By the time I was in my twenties, it just seemed more likely that you’d be living away from your home towns, starting your own life. But what we didn’t realize was what that meant down the road, when we would start our own families. That our village wouldn’t be made of our family, but instead close friends. The only problem with that, is that most other young parents are working to support themselves, thus aren’t always available to be your village. It can be hard to ask a friend for help when you know she’s simultaneously drowning in her own house.

So if it “takes a village,” but you’re doing it on your own, I see you. It’s HARD, and it is exhausting. But one day we will be on the other side of these days, telling our babies that it takes a village. And hopefully, we will be right down the road to help them. 🩵

After having my first daughter, I felt like I knew After having my first daughter, I felt like I knew a lot about parenting. I had it down, we had a routine and a schedule and she was pretty easy to handle. Then we had a second. And I realized that everything I THOUGHT I knew about parenting was a lie. I wasn’t a pro at “parenting,” I was a pro at parenting HER. Now I do everything I can not to laugh when a mom of only one child talks like I did. I get it, we’ve been there too, and I’m not judging. But the more kids you add in, the more experience you get as a parent. Because every personality is SO different, that the way you parent one isn’t always the same as the way you parent the others.

Thoughts?
When I heard this audio, I instantly loved it. It’s such a crazy thing to see in nature, that God is showing us just how stressful and depleting being a new mama can be.

So if you’re in the thick of it mama, just know you’ll get your pink back soon.
