DIY Police Officer Ornaments

DIY Police Officer Ornament

I hate photographing shiny things. It’s high up there on my list of pet peeves. Without professional camera equipment, it’s nearly impossible for me to get a good *glare-less* photo with what I’ve got to work with here. Which is a whole lot of nothing. For some reason my husband won’t let me turn our spare room into a photo studio for my blog projects. I mean, I already have half of the room taken up with crafting supplies, can’t we just get rid of the spare bed? Our guests can sleep on the floor right?

Despite the fact that my husband is holding me back photographically (is that even a thing?), I wanted to make him a special ornament for Christmas. For those of you that aren’t aware (have you been living under a rock?!), the Thin Blue Line is a cop thing. So I started with clear glass bulb ornaments. Poured a little black satin acrylic paint inside, swirled it to coat, and let dry. Then, after trial and error (tried super glue, tried hot glue), I settled on regular school glue to glue the blue ribbon on. Tied my husband’s badge number to the top with a bow and voila!

While this project is super simple, it’s also quite time consuming. After I made B’s ornament, he had the bright idea to see if any of his co-workers wanted to purchase one. Which was good. Until I had to make them all. I think he was just trying to get me to make some extra cash to build an extension on our house so I can have my own photo studio. What do you think?

Snowman Pillar Candles

12.05.2016

DIY Snowman Pillar CandlesI’m always looking for a good Dollar Store craft. You should know this about me by now. If the project costs less than $5 it is right up my alley. Since I already have shelves, boxes, and drawers filled with crafting supplies, I better not need to buy the usuals: glue, scissors, markers, or the most important glitter. So my $5 can go directly to the meat of the project. In this case: candles.

I saw this project on The 36th Avenue, which is exactly where you should go to get a more detailed tutorial. They also did a bunch of other cute candles that make perfect Christmas gifts. How do I know, you may ask? What do you think I gave all of my co-workers and family friends last year? I’ll give you a hint: it’s a candle and it rhymes with no-man.

Mine turned out a little differently than the pretty ones at 36 Avenue, but I was pretty happy with them none-the-less. And so were all my gift receivers. I think they knew it was either this or a bucket of coal. They weren’t going to complain.

He’s Baaackkk….

Elf on the Shelf - Clark Griswold Christmas VacationReaders Beware:

In case you aren’t familiar with my elf, Reuben, I will give you a quick highlight. He is sassy, a little dirty, and quite offensive. Because of this, if you tend to be someone who is easily offended, I’d say you should think twice before finishing this post. If you’re not easily offended, welcome to Reuben’s world!

If you’d like to catch up with Reuben, you should check this post from last year. You’ll get quickly acquainted with his style and personality. And then you can return to this post to see what Reuben was up to last year. And in case you want to follow along with him this year, I’ll be posting all of his experiences on Instagram, either my personal page or my blog page. He has his own hashtag, clearly, #reubentheelf.

Here are my favorites from last year, in no particular order. Remember, I have warned you.

Elf on the Shelf - We Can Do It!
Reuben standing tall with Feminists everywhere!
Elf on the Shelf - Victoria's Secret Fashion Show Peeping Tom
Reuben may have been escorted from the fashion show for inappropriate behavior!
Elf on the Shelf - Vanity Fair
Reuben wanted to see if he liked being Roberta better than Reuben.
Elf on the Shelf - Hillary Clinton
Hey, if Bill can do it?
Elf on the Shelf - Fight for 15
Fighting for $15 with the Locals
Elf on the Shelf - Donald Trump builds a wall
Building “THE WALL.”
Elf on the Shelf - Tom Brady and DeflateGate
Deflate Gate.
Elf on the Shelf - Is the dress blue or gold?
Is the dress blue or gold?

I’d also like to call attention to the fact that clearly Reuben is a psychic. Somehow he knew last Christmas who the two final Presidential candidates would be this year. I always knew there was something special about him.

What’s been your favorite Reuben?

Halloween Pillar Candle DIY

10.25.2016

Easy Dollar Store Halloween Decoration Ideas - Painted Pillar Candle

I have two requirements when I plan out my holiday projects. 1) They must be easy. B) They must be cheap. And by cheap, I don’t mean like less than $50. I mean ideally less than $2. I want to buy one or two items at the dollar store, throw a little glitter or glue on top, and call it a night. I want my $2 bottle of wine to cost more and last longer than the project takes. I don’t want to have to open the second bottle of two buck chuck. That just triples my project cost.

Somehow, somewhere along the line, I lost my attention span. You’d think with all the projects I’m constantly doing, that I’d have a little more patience with making projects. You’d be wrong. I must have wasted all my patience on the twenty-five plus years of project-making. I’d like to claim a little ADD is responsible for this mess of a brain, but that would just be to get myself some adderall. Kidding guys….

I want my projects to be easier to complete than my mother stealing my trick-or-treating candy from me as a child. You all know the story, I’m sure your pathetic excuses for parents did the same thing to you. “Oh, Johnny! Before you eat any of that candy, I need to inspect it. You know, for razor blades and poison, things like that.” Somehow, every year without fail, all of my tootsie rolls were poisoned! Ugh the nerve of our neighbors! You’d think I grew up in the projects.

Put down your tootsie rolls for a second and let me tell you about this super simple Halloween DIY project. Buy a pillar candle from the dollar store, and a bottle of Matte Black spray paint ($.98 at Walmart). If you don’t have sticker letters at home, you’ll need a pack of those too. Stick the letters on, spray the candle black, wait for it to dry (this is about the time my patience is tested), and pull the stickers off. Yup. That easy.

Now back to the tootsie rolls.

Why yes, I do. 🤣🤣🤣

One of my favorite things we get to give our girls One of my favorite things we get to give our girls is perspective. To see new places. To meet different people. To experience cultures outside of their own.

Not so they grow up thinking one place is “better” than another — but so they grow up curious, grateful, and grounded. And the more of the world we see, the more thankful I become for home, for the freedoms we have, and for the life we get to build together.

Social media makes it feel like every trip requires new outfits, a new summer closet, a new date-night dress…but honestly? It doesn’t.

I’m willing to bet you already have plenty of great options hanging in your closet. And instead of spending a bunch of money on clothes you’ll probably only wear once, maybe it’s enough to just wear what you already love.

The sticky fingerprints will wash away, the car seats will come out, bedtime routines will end, and the house that once felt so loud will get quieter little by little.

It’s strange how the things that exhaust you in the moment become the very things you ache for later. 🤍

Don’t get me wrong, if it were in the budget you better believe it’s worth it. I am not advocating for giving them LESS, I’m just advocating for staying within your families budget. And maybe if we see more of these easy little inexpensive gifts, we can make it more acceptable to gift within budget. Because that’s what it’s all about.

What’s that saying? It’s the thought that counts.

To me, Mother’s Day is not just about me. It’s about the women who helped shape me, as a mother, a woman, a friend. It’s about my friends who help me be a better mother, even if they don’t have little kids themselves. It’s about my own mother, who is the biggest inspiration for me, to be a better mother myself. It’s about the many generations before me that allowed me to be a mother at all. It’s about every woman in my life that loves me and my girls as if they’re their own. That’s who I’ll be celebrating this Mother’s Day.
