Life’s a Beach

7.24.2014

Life's a Beach Survival Kit Bucket // Free PrintableThe first time I met my sister-in-law, I wanted to impress. I mean, let’s be honest, we all know that it could be a make or break situation. If the family doesn’t like you, there’s a good possibility that it’s over. I made sure to tell my husband that before he met mine…and now they’re inseparable. Seriously. He calls them more than I do.

My SIL (We shall call her “C”) flew out from the East Coast to visit us for a weekend. I knew we’d be spending most of our time at the beach, so I wanted to come up with a little “beach themed” gift. I also didn’t want to put a bunch of random things she couldn’t use in it, so I looked for things she could actually get some use out of. C is verrryyyyy trendy, in ways I can only hope to be someday (am I too grown up to hope to be just like her when I grow up?). Now that C and I are real sisters, maybe her coolness will rub off on me. A girl can hope.

On a side note, I didn’t get good photos of this gift because I actually made it a few years ago, back when I could have never dreamed of having my own blog.

It all started with a bucket. Not a dream. A bucket.

I picked up some essentials:

Sunglasses

Sunscreen

Snacks (Goldfish Crackers, fruit snacks)

A beach ball (DUH!)

A magazine

A lei

Fish Skewers (see instructions below)

Red Neck Wine Glass (substitute with fun plastic cup)

Lifesavers (Get it? Hehe)

Bottle of Water

When I had everything I thought I needed, I went out and found more. No really, I think I have a shopping problem. These gift baskets always ruin me. But there are a lot of other ingredients you can use too for baskets. You could also buy a cute beach bag and use that instead of the bucket. Some other ideas would be:

Cheap sandals (Old Navy always has perfect flip flops!)

 A fun Tank Top

Towel

Aloe Vera

Chap stick with SPF

Hair Ties (For a woman. Or a man with really long hair. No discrimination here.)

Bottle Opener and a Bottle of Beer

Good Book

Piece of Fruit

Cleansing Wipes

Take everything you have purchased, put it in your bucket or bag, and tie a little tag to the side. You can print the one I made here: Life’s A Beach. I know…real tough right? Super cute, super easy, and a really fun gift. I think that this gift definitely was a hit for C. That, or the jello shots I made in lemon slices. Those were definitely the hit of the weekend.EDIT2

So these fish skewers? Super easy. Finding the dang little buggers is the hardest part. I found mine at one of those random candy stores in malls that never has anyone inside, and you constantly wonder how they stay in business? Yeah. That place. I could have just purchased Swedish Fish, but those are only red, and I am not racist. I wanted all colors! Love to all. Okay really I just wanted it to be pretty. I also found these awesome blue sharks at that random candy store, so I picked up a few of them too. I put them all on kabob sticks, tied them in clear wrap, and put the little tags on them. You can print your own Fish Skewers tags too.

And just in case you read this whole blog post, and the only thing you were thinking was, “I want to make my own jello shots in lemon slices” – Here’s a good recipe to follow. I didn’t have any special tools to hollow out my lemons, so I just used a spoon. If you’re anything like me, you do what you can with what you have. No need to go out shopping for a random tool you will use once. Mine turned out fine without. Well actually…I think they turned out amazing, but that’s just me.378237_10151142557875185_532098310_n(My brother in law “K” and my Lemon Jello Shots! Model Material!) 😉

I’m Leaving On a Jet Plane!

7.21.2014

Husband/Boyfriend Survival Kit // Free printableI’m leaving on a jet plane! That’s right…I know what you’re thinking. How will my husband ever survive without me? Don’t worry, I’m thinking the same thing. He could never be content with just spending his days golfing, laying by the pool with his friends, or meeting the guys for a drink. That is just not his style. 😉

Although I don’t like to admit it, he will probably have a better weekend without me being here. He will have to cook his own dinners though, so I plan on leaving him our favorite pizza place’s number on the counter. He doesn’t even trust himself to cook dinner, so I’m not being that harsh. I like knowing he enjoys my cooking (even when I can barely stomach it).

This weekend I’m flying home to attend a friend’s wedding. Since he couldn’t make it, I thought I’d leave him a cute little care package. I came up with a few “ingredients” he could use in case of emergency, and put them all together for him. Now all I have left to do is make sure he knows where the fire extinguisher is, and we should be all set.Husband/Boyfriend Survival Kit // Free printableYou’ll need to buy only a few ingredients, and print off the right image for you. Paperclip

Puzzle Piece

Stick of Gum

Kleenex

Rubberband

Lollipop

LifesaverHusband/Boyfriend Survival Kit // Free printablePut them all together in a little Ziploc bag, and staple the printable to the top. I ran out of time, so I’m sure there are plenty of other cute ways to package this as well, and I’d love to hear about them if you have them!

Knock-Knock? Who’s There? B!

7.16.2014

DIY Letter Door Hanger // Rae of SparklesYour whole life you grow up on one side of the alphabet. I am still adjusting from living on the “S” side of the alphabet, to the “B” side now. It’s quite a change. When I’m listed alphabetically, I get lost every time. I still go to the end of the alphabet, before I remember I’m a B now. Gosh the things you have to get used to! While the S was a prettier letter by far (not to mention it stands for Sparkle), I do love my new B. There are plenty of less-fortunate letters out there. Not mentioning any names…but I think you know who you are.

It comes in handy that a B looks nice hanging on a door for my next project. This could not have been any easier, so I thought I’d share. Most of what you will need, you probably have at home, otherwise you can pick it all up at Michael’s (including the letter):

Wooden/Tagboard Letter

One piece of 12X12 designed paper

Modge Podge and applier

Flowers of your choice

Buttons

Razor

Glue gun

Ribbon of your choiceDIY Letter Door Hanger // Rae of SparklesI started by adhering the paper to the B, then removed excess paper with the razor. Then I found some flower papers that would look best, and used a glue gun to adhere them to the bottom. I used buttons as centers, but you could use anything you have around the house. Then I just tied a piece of pink ribbon through the top hole (if your letter isn’t fortunate enough for a hole, just use the glue gun to adhere ribbon to the back of your letter). Voila! You’re done!DIY Letter Door Hanger // Rae of SparklesHang your letter on your front door or anywhere of your choosing! These would make cute gifts too for those people that have everything (including a fun last name initial!).

Long Distance Love

7.14.2014

Keep In Touch // Great Gift for Long Distance FriendsRemember the good ol’ days, when you ran to the mailbox after school hoping for a letter from your pen pal?! Okay, maybe I am just more nerdy than most, but I sure remember those days. I still love getting mail, and I still have a “pen pal.” Only now we just refer to ourselves as friends that write letters, so we don’t appear that dorky (I need all the help I can get!).

My mother-in-law recently moved across the country, leaving behind many friends that she is very close to. For Mother’s Day, we tried to think of something perfect for her, but came up short. Then a light bulb went off! She would like to keep in touch with her friends more, and this was the perfect solution.

I purchased about 8 greeting cards, primarily “thinking of you” cards, and went to the post office to get stamps. I opted for cuter, more personal stamps than generics. I chose floral stamps because it suited my mother in law better than some of the options (Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix stamps were just not cutting it). I put a stamp on each card, and addressed just one so she would know what the whole point was.Keep In Touch // Great Gift for Long Distance FriendsI then needed an envelope that fit all the cards perfectly, so what else to do than make one myself!? I just took one piece of 12×12 scrapbook paper, folded the sides in to fit around the cards, and then cut the top/bottom to size. If you’d like step-by-step directions, you can find them here. Otherwise I just googled “DIY Envelope Outline,” and copied the image.

I used a flower button (what else!), and hot glued it onto the envelope. I took twine and tied it around the button to make it an easy open/close envelope.

Overall, it turned out very cute, and if I must say so myself, I think it’s a pretty good gift idea. Especially for the hard to shop for friends and family. I will definitely be re-creating this in the future.

Even with the bathroom trips. 🤣 Listen. Social me Even with the bathroom trips. 🤣

Listen. Social media tends to make traveling with children look glamorous, and the truth is, it usually isn’t. Are some kids professional travelers? Of course. But reality is that there’s always pitfalls and unexpected turbulence that you just have to mentally prepare for before you travel. And in the end? I promise you, it’s worth all the hassle.

Why yes, I do. 🤣🤣🤣

One of my favorite things we get to give our girls One of my favorite things we get to give our girls is perspective. To see new places. To meet different people. To experience cultures outside of their own.

Not so they grow up thinking one place is “better” than another — but so they grow up curious, grateful, and grounded. And the more of the world we see, the more thankful I become for home, for the freedoms we have, and for the life we get to build together.

Social media makes it feel like every trip requires new outfits, a new summer closet, a new date-night dress…but honestly? It doesn’t.

I’m willing to bet you already have plenty of great options hanging in your closet. And instead of spending a bunch of money on clothes you’ll probably only wear once, maybe it’s enough to just wear what you already love.

Don’t get me wrong, if it were in the budget you better believe it’s worth it. I am not advocating for giving them LESS, I’m just advocating for staying within your families budget. And maybe if we see more of these easy little inexpensive gifts, we can make it more acceptable to gift within budget. Because that’s what it’s all about.

What’s that saying? It’s the thought that counts.

To me, Mother’s Day is not just about me. It’s about the women who helped shape me, as a mother, a woman, a friend. It’s about my friends who help me be a better mother, even if they don’t have little kids themselves. It’s about my own mother, who is the biggest inspiration for me, to be a better mother myself. It’s about the many generations before me that allowed me to be a mother at all. It’s about every woman in my life that loves me and my girls as if they’re their own. That’s who I’ll be celebrating this Mother’s Day.
