8 Must-See Tourist Stops in San Francisco

6.22.2015

San Francisco Tourist Stops San Francisco is in my backyard. If my backyard was in the middle of nowhere.  I try to get up the courage to brave the traffic into the city as much as I can, but usually end up sticking closer to home. So when I get visitors, we do what any other visitor would do: We hit up the tourist spots in San Francisco.

For Memorial Day weekend, my little sisters drove up from Los Angeles. We work perfectly together, because I love taking pictures, and they love getting their pictures taken. Seriously though, I’ve gotten much better than when they were little. I was known to force them into making home “movies” whenever I was bored. I think they were a little frightened of me, but I guess that means I did something right.

Besides being absolutely gorgeous, my favorite twins have such good souls. If you are interested in learning a little more about them, they have their own blog, Twinspiration. Check it out!

1. Ferry Building 1 (on Saturdays).  An amazing Farmer’s Market, complete with food trucks and the most expensive vegetables you’ve ever seen, takes over the ferry building. I think they take the cake on Whole Foods prices, but the atmosphere alone is worth the trip, and some of the best food in the city is inside the Ferry Building. If you’re lucky enough to be there on a Saturday for the market, Roli Roti Gourmet Rotisserie has a booth that is city-known. All the locals stop in for their favorite Porchetta Sandwich.

2. The more obvious, Fisherman’s Wharf. From there, you can see (or visit) Alcatraz, see the sea lions sunbathing, and also get a good view of The Golden Gate Bridge. You’ll also walk through lots of fun touristy shops, while sipping on a Biscoff coffee (or is that just us?). They also have the freshest fruit selection on Saturdays that I’ve ever seen. Strawberry’s as big as your hand. The Shnozberries taste like Shnozberries!

Venture your way down the block from Fisherman’s Wharf to visit Ghirardelli Square. You’ll have a great view of the bridge while you walk up into the Ghirardelli store to sample some delicious chocolate, or treat yo-self to an amazing hot fudge sundae. You can also hitch a ride in the famous San Francisco Trolley’s from this center. Or, just hop on board for a photo-op like me.

And by “the bridge,” I clearly mean the big Gate. So drive down to Crissy Field, find a parking spot (and then if you find one, buy a lottery ticket, because today is clearly your lucky day), and snap a few photos with the bridge. Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco, CA

5. Chinatown. I don’t think that can be any more obvious. San Francisco is raving with Asian culture, and Chinatown does not disappoint. Just walking down Grant Ave. will give you the best experience of Chinatown. Venture into some shops, buy some Chinese souvenirs, and then stop at one of the unique grocers to take photos of disgusting looking food. I’m sure it’s real tasty….I just don’t have the courage to try it! Stop at Hunan Home’s restaurant (622 Jackson St.) for some delicious Chinese food!

6. Union Square. Want to be at the center of the San Franciscan universe? Visit Union Square to see the flurry of locals coming and going in a hustle. You’ll have great views, just take a seat and people watch.

7. The Painted Ladies (Steiner St.). Otherwise known as The Full House houses. This is a must-see for anyone that grew up in the 90’s and loved Full House. You’ll get to the park and see people everywhere taking photos of the beautiful Victorian houses. It’s a quick stop, but if you love Full House, it’s a must stop.

8. Lombard Street. There is no street as unique as Lombard Street. I haven’t been around the whole world, but Lombard wins in my book. One suggestion: Walk Lombard Street, don’t drive it. As cool as it is to look at, it would be a nightmare to navigate. Plus, you’ll get better photos from the bottom. (Side note: I didn’t take the twins here, so I had to improvise)

So what do you think? Am I missing anything major? I will save the best food stops for another time, that will take some serious thought. There is just TOO MUCH good food in San Fran.

We are not blood related actually! We just consider ourselves sisters because we grew up together and then lived together! It’s easier to just say sisters than to explain! Hahaha. 🙂

    Ms. Shauna Rae,

Your little sisters are as gorgeous as you are! And SO glad you posted this, love the photos (all photogenic) and love your ideas. I though, would love to know what/where you go in your ‘little town’?? Michael (BF’s) father lives in Saratoga, so we go back & forth a few times (as you now know). LOL
Do you and hubby have some suggests for us? Campers (trailer style), hikes, bikes, likes (lol) and anything for romance, laughter and just plain perfect views??

Thank you again, remain your fan (as well as adding your sisters)!
    Laura

Hi!!!! You come down here frequently!?! How cool! We’ve only been to Saratoga once, we went to a burger bar there (my food of choice). In San Jose, we like to go downtown to the San Pedro Square Market (similar to a public market, lots of different food booths, live music on the weekends). We love downtown Campbell in the summer (the farmers market there on Sundays is the best in the area). Los Gatos (closest to Saratoga) is beautiful, downtown is picturesque. There is a close drive to there, about 30 minutes from San Jose to Big Basin State Park and there are huge Redwoods, and lots of hiking trails. Saratoga has such great wineries with beautiful views, have you been to some there?

Let me know when you come down here again! 🙂

Ten thumbs up for Roli Roti! It’s soooo good! I’ve been living in SF for almost six years and I’m so sad that I’ll be leaving this August to move to Chicago. I plan to come back though 🙂 Sounds like you had a great time in the city!

Hahaha Lisa! I knew you’d like it! I remember from your list, and I don’t actually like it. But I figure if people are being tourists, they probably should try it since it’s a city fav. 🙂

You’re moving?!?! How sad!! I’m originally from Wisconsin, so I’m familiar with that area. I love Chicago, but HATE winters! 🙁

A core memory I didn’t know I’d be making… This w A core memory I didn’t know I’d be making…

This weekend at church, my daughter got to light the candles for the first time. At the end of the service, when she went up on her own to extinguish them, proud tears dropped from my eyes. And as I looked around at others, I noticed I wasn’t the only one.

If you had asked me in my early to mid twenties, I wouldn’t have imagined how much this community, this faith, and these little traditions would come to mean to our family. There was a season of my life, long before I became a mom, where I drifted away from actively going to church. Now, getting to watch my girls grow up surrounded by faith, love, and a church family who knows them and celebrates them feels like such a gift.
Hot take: We’ve convinced ourselves kids need bigg Hot take: We’ve convinced ourselves kids need bigger backyards, when what they really need is neighborhood kids.

I used to think about more square footage, more land, more privacy. Now? I’d rather my girls have friends they can run to than an acre they have to play on alone.

A bigger house isn’t always a better childhood. For us, built-in community has been worth more than an extra bedroom ever could be.

I know this won’t be everyone’s opinion, but I think for elementary-aged kids, having friends next door is more valuable than having a huge yard. Anyone else change their mind about what “dream home” actually means?

I’ll die on this hill: kids birthday parties SHOUL I’ll die on this hill: kids birthday parties SHOULD feel magical.

Before anyone comes at me, I’m not talking about spending thousands of dollars. I’m talking about picking a theme, hanging the decorations, baking the cake (or buying it and decorating at home), planning the games, and making your kid feel like the most important person in the world for one day.

That’s the stuff they’ll remember.

You don’t need a huge budget to make childhood feel special. Agree or disagree?
Even with the bathroom trips. 🤣 Listen. Social me Even with the bathroom trips. 🤣

Listen. Social media tends to make traveling with children look glamorous, and the truth is, it usually isn’t. Are some kids professional travelers? Of course. But reality is that there’s always pitfalls and unexpected turbulence that you just have to mentally prepare for before you travel. And in the end? I promise you, it’s worth all the hassle.

Why yes, I do. 🤣🤣🤣

One of my favorite things we get to give our girls One of my favorite things we get to give our girls is perspective. To see new places. To meet different people. To experience cultures outside of their own.

Not so they grow up thinking one place is “better” than another — but so they grow up curious, grateful, and grounded. And the more of the world we see, the more thankful I become for home, for the freedoms we have, and for the life we get to build together.

I might be the world’s worst “influencer,” because I might be the world’s worst “influencer,” because I’m here to tell you this: you do not need a whole new wardrobe for vacation.

Social media makes it feel like every trip requires new outfits, a new summer closet, a new date-night dress…but honestly? It doesn’t.

I’m willing to bet you already have plenty of great options hanging in your closet. And instead of spending a bunch of money on clothes you’ll probably only wear once, maybe it’s enough to just wear what you already love.
One day, instead of hearing little feet running th One day, instead of hearing little feet running through the house all day, I’ll be leaving voicemails hoping they call me back when they have time.

The sticky fingerprints will wash away, the car seats will come out, bedtime routines will end, and the house that once felt so loud will get quieter little by little.

It’s strange how the things that exhaust you in the moment become the very things you ache for later. 🤍
