Away We Go: Playa del Carmen, Mexico

7.09.2015

Playa del Carmen, Mexico // Boat DockOh Playa, how I love thee. And not just the beach playa, but the town Playa as well. I love it all. Except when there’s a hurricane. Then it’s a little tough to love you. But who am I kidding, I still love you, even then.

Our trip to Playa del Carmen, Mexico this year was full of new experiences. From buying over-sized sombreros for the first time, to surviving our first “hurricane,” and coming through the storm to enjoy all that the town had to offer. While stepping over fallen palm trees at the same time. And did I mention buying sombreros?

The Reef Coco Beach, Playa del Carmen, Mexico // Parrot

We booked this vacation through Expedia and everything went smoothly. We stayed at The Reef Coco Beach hotel in Playa del Carmen, and the location could not have been more perfect. We wanted all-inclusive (when you drink by the pool all day it can add up quickly!), and Playa doesn’t have a lot of options close to town. The Reef is literally three blocks from one end of 5th Avenue, which is the Place To Be. Everything is on 5th Avenue, including some of the best shopping and restaurants in the area, the sombreros, and tequila shots. We had our fair share of all of the above.

Playa Del Carmen, Mexico // Lucha Libre Masks

After purchasing said sombreros, we could not walk down 5th Avenue without being stopped by every merchant looking to make a quick buck. Nothing screams “AMERICAN TOURIST” like a sombrero on a white dude. Luckily, we were able to talk these boys out of the Lucha Libre masks.

Playa Del Carmen, Mexico // Beach VolleyballThey didn’t let that put a damper on their vacation. Before the storm hit, we were able to get out and play some beach volleyball. Then we spent two days in our hotel room hoping that the roof stayed on the hotel! Which, in case you were wondering, did in fact, stay on the hotel.

The storm may have brought 40+mph winds and buckets of rain, but it also brought pretty views and quality time (QT) for my husband and I. So really, I can’t complain. Two days of rain won’t bring us down! He, however, might say it was a little too much QT. Is there any such thing?

Playa Del Carmen, Mexico // Beach Storm

The hotel grounds were beautiful, and even more so than I had expected. Being that we like to travel on a pretty cheap budget, you never really know what to expect from your hotel. Ours was perfect for us! Pretty views, great staff, and lots of beach room! Too bad the storm brought in all the seaweed, or it would have been even better.

The Reef Coco Beach, Playa del Carmen, MexicoThe Reef Coco Beach, Playa del Carmen Mexico // Our TripWhen the sun finally decided to grace us with it’s presence, we got right back out there to enjoy it. We spent all our days by the pool, lounging with a Miami Vice in hand. Reading, playing pool games, and taking crazy photos. Seriously, we are crazy photo-people (if you didn’t already figure that out).

The Reef Coco Beach, Playa del Carmen, Mexico // Pools

Playa Del Carmen, MexicoYou have never completed your vacation until you take a “jumping” photo. So in true Vacation Ending mode, we went out to the sea and jumped to our hearts desire. Because one photo wasn’t enough, apparently.

Playa del Carmen, Mexico // LagoonUntil next time Playa! Adios!

I just spent a week last month at Wyndham Viva Maya. All inclusive. I booked it through RCI. Unbelievable experience. I think it was Rivera Maya. All inclusive is the way to go. We were able to dine at the Wyndham Aztec restaurants at no extra charge.

Oh I completely agree. We only travel non-all-inclusive (new word) on Christmas break, because the prices at the all-inclusive s are crazy high. Isn’t Riviera Maya beautiful!?

Oh let me tell you, it phenomenal. The only place better, is Costembar in the Dominican Republic. You can sit down to a wonderful meal of Parrot fish.

Costembar is a gated area in Puerto Plata. It is a slice of Heaven. In the morning when the tide was out, we would skim for lobster. Lobster and scrambled eggs for breakfast.

We stayed at Reina Del Mar for seven days for only 77,000 Wyndham points. Through RCI. Did you know that you can buy Wyndham points on line? I bought 1.3 million points for $2500 dollars on ebay.

Thank you! I mean, who ever said white girls can’t jump? 😉 – And you should go Mexico! Tulum supposedly has the best beaches, we haven’t been yet. It’s only about 45 minutes from Playa though, so you still get the pretty beaches.

A core memory I didn’t know I’d be making… This w A core memory I didn’t know I’d be making…

This weekend at church, my daughter got to light the candles for the first time. At the end of the service, when she went up on her own to extinguish them, proud tears dropped from my eyes. And as I looked around at others, I noticed I wasn’t the only one.

If you had asked me in my early to mid twenties, I wouldn’t have imagined how much this community, this faith, and these little traditions would come to mean to our family. There was a season of my life, long before I became a mom, where I drifted away from actively going to church. Now, getting to watch my girls grow up surrounded by faith, love, and a church family who knows them and celebrates them feels like such a gift.
Hot take: We’ve convinced ourselves kids need bigg Hot take: We’ve convinced ourselves kids need bigger backyards, when what they really need is neighborhood kids.

I used to think about more square footage, more land, more privacy. Now? I’d rather my girls have friends they can run to than an acre they have to play on alone.

A bigger house isn’t always a better childhood. For us, built-in community has been worth more than an extra bedroom ever could be.

I know this won’t be everyone’s opinion, but I think for elementary-aged kids, having friends next door is more valuable than having a huge yard. Anyone else change their mind about what “dream home” actually means?

I’ll die on this hill: kids birthday parties SHOUL I’ll die on this hill: kids birthday parties SHOULD feel magical.

Before anyone comes at me, I’m not talking about spending thousands of dollars. I’m talking about picking a theme, hanging the decorations, baking the cake (or buying it and decorating at home), planning the games, and making your kid feel like the most important person in the world for one day.

That’s the stuff they’ll remember.

You don’t need a huge budget to make childhood feel special. Agree or disagree?
Even with the bathroom trips. 🤣 Listen. Social me Even with the bathroom trips. 🤣

Listen. Social media tends to make traveling with children look glamorous, and the truth is, it usually isn’t. Are some kids professional travelers? Of course. But reality is that there’s always pitfalls and unexpected turbulence that you just have to mentally prepare for before you travel. And in the end? I promise you, it’s worth all the hassle.

Why yes, I do. 🤣🤣🤣

One of my favorite things we get to give our girls One of my favorite things we get to give our girls is perspective. To see new places. To meet different people. To experience cultures outside of their own.

Not so they grow up thinking one place is “better” than another — but so they grow up curious, grateful, and grounded. And the more of the world we see, the more thankful I become for home, for the freedoms we have, and for the life we get to build together.

I might be the world’s worst “influencer,” because I might be the world’s worst “influencer,” because I’m here to tell you this: you do not need a whole new wardrobe for vacation.

Social media makes it feel like every trip requires new outfits, a new summer closet, a new date-night dress…but honestly? It doesn’t.

I’m willing to bet you already have plenty of great options hanging in your closet. And instead of spending a bunch of money on clothes you’ll probably only wear once, maybe it’s enough to just wear what you already love.
One day, instead of hearing little feet running th One day, instead of hearing little feet running through the house all day, I’ll be leaving voicemails hoping they call me back when they have time.

The sticky fingerprints will wash away, the car seats will come out, bedtime routines will end, and the house that once felt so loud will get quieter little by little.

It’s strange how the things that exhaust you in the moment become the very things you ache for later. 🤍
