40 Precious Jewels – A 40th Wedding Anniversary Gift

1.29.2016

You know how to tell when you can really count on someone? When you’ve been married for 40 years. It’s safe to assume that you’ve been through the ups and downs and all-arounds with that person, and came out unscathed. Or perhaps just a little worse for the wear. Especially if your spouse is a Chicago Bears fan. God bless you, you’re a saint. 40 years of that torment? (Go Pack Go!)

My in-laws have made it to that mark. They’ve spent 40 years of their lives married to each other. I don’t know how, since they don’t look a day over 50 (brownie points?). But regardless, it’s a major milestone. One that deserves lots of gifts and plenty of celebration. Or at least one gift and some champagne. Okay lots of champagne. After all, they’ve been married for forty years people!

I’m sure you’d agree with me that you can find an idea for almost everything on Pinterest. Seriously. What can you not find there? I’m pretty sure if you’re feeling hungover (there’s a pin for that) from drinking too many mimosa’s (there’s a pin for that) at your parent’s Hello Kitty themed anniversary party (there’s a pin for that too), Pinterest will save you.

Until you actually need an idea. Then Pinterest fails you. And here I thought I could count on Pinterest forever. When Pinterest and I took vows five years ago, I really thought it would be forever. I thought we’d be celebrating our 40 year anniversary some day. But do you know why we can’t? Because Pinterest has no original ideas for a 40th Anniversary. None. I’d have to come up with my own ideas? Preposterous! Clearly I’m being left out to dry.

Of course, my husband and his siblings wanted to do something extra special for their parents (cue the gifts and champagne), not just any little thing, so I really had to think. The traditional 40th Wedding Anniversary gift is a ruby. Light-bulb moment: since a ruby is a jewel, I decided to make a “40 Precious Jewels” garland for their mantle. What is more precious to parents than their children? (Cheeseburgers are not an option)

What You’ll Need:

40 three inch wooden tags

4-5 different sheets of colored/textured red paper

40 Ruby Jewel Beads

Photos

Red Ribbon/Garland/String

  1. Trace a wooden tag onto the red paper (40x), then cut out.
  2. Write out each tag with favorite memories, stories, or things you’ve learned from the couple.
  3. Print desired number of photos (we did 10) on a regular colored printer, with white cardstock.
  4. Paint the back of each wooden tag red.
  5. Use Mod Podge to adhere each red paper tag to a wooden tag.
  6. When it’s dry, use the MP again over the paper tag, to seal it.
  7. Use a thick piece of yarn or string to measure out the length you want your garland to be (mine was 6 ft long).
  8. Lay the tags out along your yarn, giving adequate spacing.
  9. Use 4/5″ strips of ribbon/garland to tie knots throughout your tags.
  10. String your ruby jewels on with yarn (or fishing line if you have it), and/or hot glue some to a few tags.

When you’re done, you’ll have a ruby garland filled with 40 Precious Jewels of memories, stories, and love. There just may be something more precious than children after all. Now, can someone please bring me the champagne? And a cheeseburger.

Caution: When the recipient opens this gift, be sure to have LOTS of Kleenex on hand. It’s a real tear jerker.

A core memory I didn’t know I’d be making… This w A core memory I didn’t know I’d be making…

This weekend at church, my daughter got to light the candles for the first time. At the end of the service, when she went up on her own to extinguish them, proud tears dropped from my eyes. And as I looked around at others, I noticed I wasn’t the only one.

If you had asked me in my early to mid twenties, I wouldn’t have imagined how much this community, this faith, and these little traditions would come to mean to our family. There was a season of my life, long before I became a mom, where I drifted away from actively going to church. Now, getting to watch my girls grow up surrounded by faith, love, and a church family who knows them and celebrates them feels like such a gift.
Hot take: We’ve convinced ourselves kids need bigg Hot take: We’ve convinced ourselves kids need bigger backyards, when what they really need is neighborhood kids.

I used to think about more square footage, more land, more privacy. Now? I’d rather my girls have friends they can run to than an acre they have to play on alone.

A bigger house isn’t always a better childhood. For us, built-in community has been worth more than an extra bedroom ever could be.

I know this won’t be everyone’s opinion, but I think for elementary-aged kids, having friends next door is more valuable than having a huge yard. Anyone else change their mind about what “dream home” actually means?

I’ll die on this hill: kids birthday parties SHOUL I’ll die on this hill: kids birthday parties SHOULD feel magical.

Before anyone comes at me, I’m not talking about spending thousands of dollars. I’m talking about picking a theme, hanging the decorations, baking the cake (or buying it and decorating at home), planning the games, and making your kid feel like the most important person in the world for one day.

That’s the stuff they’ll remember.

You don’t need a huge budget to make childhood feel special. Agree or disagree?
Even with the bathroom trips. 🤣 Listen. Social me Even with the bathroom trips. 🤣

Listen. Social media tends to make traveling with children look glamorous, and the truth is, it usually isn’t. Are some kids professional travelers? Of course. But reality is that there’s always pitfalls and unexpected turbulence that you just have to mentally prepare for before you travel. And in the end? I promise you, it’s worth all the hassle.

Why yes, I do. 🤣🤣🤣

One of my favorite things we get to give our girls One of my favorite things we get to give our girls is perspective. To see new places. To meet different people. To experience cultures outside of their own.

Not so they grow up thinking one place is “better” than another — but so they grow up curious, grateful, and grounded. And the more of the world we see, the more thankful I become for home, for the freedoms we have, and for the life we get to build together.

I might be the world’s worst “influencer,” because I might be the world’s worst “influencer,” because I’m here to tell you this: you do not need a whole new wardrobe for vacation.

Social media makes it feel like every trip requires new outfits, a new summer closet, a new date-night dress…but honestly? It doesn’t.

I’m willing to bet you already have plenty of great options hanging in your closet. And instead of spending a bunch of money on clothes you’ll probably only wear once, maybe it’s enough to just wear what you already love.
One day, instead of hearing little feet running th One day, instead of hearing little feet running through the house all day, I’ll be leaving voicemails hoping they call me back when they have time.

The sticky fingerprints will wash away, the car seats will come out, bedtime routines will end, and the house that once felt so loud will get quieter little by little.

It’s strange how the things that exhaust you in the moment become the very things you ache for later. 🤍
