The Chosen, Season 2

5.02.2021

When I was growing up, we attended church every weekend. I also attended a private school.

Basically, we studied the Bible six days a week.

We watched countless movies depicting the books of the Bible, the stories, and the teachings of Jesus Christ. If you watched any of those movies in the nineties like I did, you are probably groaning right now too. They were always so old.

They definitely never held the attention of a bunch of kids. Oh, how I wish we had some of the technology we have today. It would have saved me hours of boredom.

Nowadays, we have so many options. Movies and shows are just not what they used to be (in a good way), and we can actually enjoy watching historical films without rolling our eyes. I mean, I’m sure now that I’m grown, I could at least hide my eye-rolling.

The Chosen

As parents, we don’t get unlimited free time to watch our own shows or movies, so being intentional with our time is also pretty important to us.

For my husband and I, it’s been a while since we have found a show that we have really gotten into. Enter in “The Chosen.”

When our friends told us about it, we weren’t sure what our thoughts would be. After watching the entire first season, I can definitely say that we are hooked.

What Is The Chosen?

The Chosen is releasing Season Two now, the first episode aired on Easter Sunday. From here on, they will keep releasing the episodes as they are edited (so no official timeline yet, follow their website or social media for updated releases).

This project has also been completely crowd-funded, which is amazing in itself (and Season Two has already been completely funded). They are aiming for a seven-season production, which is a challenge, but worth it if it comes to fruition as the first season has!

Director and creator Dallas Jenkins and his team have done a great job giving us an insight into Scripture with different points of view.

Quick plot line for you: The Chosen is based on the biblical events of Jesus Christ (and the other main biblical characters as well) and follows the Scripture.

What surprised us the most was that it is so well-written that we found ourselves laughing along and found it oddly relatable (something you may not feel when reading the Bible on your own). It doesn’t feel like you are watching those old-school biblical movies (thankfully); it feels like you are watching a compelling drama.

The characters are as relatable as they are familiar, giving the viewer a connection to the show they may not have expected.

Season One

The first season gives you a look into Jesus from the eyes of the people that knew Him on Earth. It gives you an almost ‘behind the scenes look into all the stories you grew up reading in the Bible (or learning about in Sunday school), but from a much more compelling viewpoint.

You get  a little better footing in regards to understanding the stories because it is put into historical context. The first season is mainly centered around the early time of Jesus Christ before He became well known. It gives you inside into some of the first disciples, as well as Mary Magdalene.

The first episodes center around the ‘supporting’ characters of Christ, exploring their backgrounds before intersecting with Jesus Christ. From that point, we follow Christ as He begins his early ministry. You will see Him do the miracles you have read about countless times in Scripture, like helping a leper and turning water into wine.

Why You Should Watch The Chosen Too

Listen, I would never claim to know every detail of the Bible and the stories I have grown up reading. But after doing a little research, I have found that this series is incredibly close to the Scripture.

If you are looking for a way to get a better understanding of the historical context of the Scripture, this is the way to do it. I do not know about you, but I would much rather see and hear the stories acted out on screen versus reading about them (and sometimes not understanding what I am reading).

It helps that we can connect to the characters visually and emotionally, something that is not always possible from reading.

Overall, if you are looking for a family-friendly Christian show to watch, I think this is a really good place to start. It is available online to stream for free (see link below), which makes it even more convenient (it is also extremely easy to download and watch, no hassle or subscriptions). For us, it is something we feel happy about watching, feeling as if we are learning more about Jesus Christ as we watch it.

Unpopular opinion: kids don’t need more stuff. The Unpopular opinion: kids don’t need more stuff. They need more boredom. More freedom. More outside time. More chances to build a world out of sticks and dirt instead of asking for the next new thing.

I’m not interested in raising a child who expects constant entertainment or new toys. I want to raise one who knows how to create their own magic.

#familylove #familybonding
Something I tell my little girls all the time, yet Something I tell my little girls all the time, yet wish most grown women understood too. I see so many adults actively TRYING to fit in…work, church, neighborhood, sports, etc.

You shouldn’t have to try. If you’re trying to be someone you’re not, it’s not right. For you, or for them. Your tribe will come along, I promise you. Even if that tribe is one person, it’ll be better than a hundred women who just don’t get you.
Listen. I’m all about having a good time. I love t Listen. I’m all about having a good time. I love to travel, I love to go out for dinner, I love having new clothes. But somewhere along the way, we’ve lost the ability to just say “No, I don’t want to spend the money on that.”

Our budgets don’t always allow for the same experiences that our friend or neighbors may have, and that is perfectly okay. We need to stop overspending and start saving. We need to be financially secure before buying more junk that isn’t fulfilling, or going out for another dinner.

Do you feel comfortable telling someone you don’t have the budget for something?
Somewhere along the way we forget to find the joy Somewhere along the way we forget to find the joy in all the little things. The little joys in twirling in a flower field. Stopping to smell the flowers.

If we want our children to enjoy all of the little joys, we need to make sure we are doing it too. What little joy did you enjoy today?
Growing up, I dreamed of living by the beach and p Growing up, I dreamed of living by the beach and palm trees. It was magical to me. I never felt like my soul belonged in a landlocked state. A cold state. Were there beautiful things about it? Of course. Summer in Wisconsin will always have my heart. But living by the ocean will always be where my soul feels at home.

Over twenty years ago I got in a car and drove across the country to San Diego with a few friends. I’ve now lived here longer than I lived in Wisconsin. And even though I’ll always “be” from Wisconsin, my girls will always be from San Diego. And that’s a crazy concept to me. Raising the girls at the beach was something out of my dreams. So now I can teach them firsthand that we CAN make our dreams come true!
I remember when my oldest was little and someone t I remember when my oldest was little and someone told me that she NEEDED to go to preschool or she’d never catch up. I feel the same way today that I felt then, six years ago. My daughters never NEEDED preschool. Is it a good option for some parents (or the only option for others)? Yes. Is it BAD? No. But kids don’t NEED it. They need outdoor spaces, they need playgrounds and parks and beaches. They need free play with neighbors and friends and family. And yes, if none of those are options, of course preschool is not a bad idea, but can we stop pretending kids that don’t go are going to be irreparably harmed?
There’s just something about that second child. Th There’s just something about that second child. They pick up everything so quickly. They’re unstoppable. They want to do everything and they want to do it now.

Second child life.
The day my husband looked at me and said, “I’m so The day my husband looked at me and said, “I’m so glad we have daughters,” I just about melted. Because like most men, he always envisioned a son. Someone he could pass his useless sports knowledge to, someone he could play mediocre golf with. Maybe someone to watch the hockey playoffs with (that doesn’t complain like I do).

When we found out our second girl was coming, he famously said he watched the pink smoke hoping it would turn to purple and then blue. The first thing out of his mouth after he really digested it was, “now I have to pay for two weddings.”

And then one day, not long after the second came along, he realized why he’s a a girl dad. Because he couldn’t be more perfect for them. And they are exactly what he needed.
After seeing the beauty of this world, I just don’ After seeing the beauty of this world, I just don’t see how there’s any other option. God’s beauty is in everything, and sometimes I feel sad that I’ll never be able to see it all.
