Saturday Night Shenanigans…

2.09.2015

DIY Felt Valentine Envelopes
Hello Monday, goodbye weekend! I know I speak for all of us when I say that we wish we had more time off. My time would be very well spent, thank you very much. This weekend I completed several crafts (which, of course, I plan to blog about this week), I drank one bottle of wine (it’s only four glasses, come on), and ate three pieces of cookie dough (who has time to bake it). I mean, if that doesn’t sum up a wild & crazy weekend, I don’t know what does. Oh, and I almost forgot: I had the most life-changing sandwich. It was Heaven on Earth. Or at least what I imagine Heaven to be. Because let me just tell you, it would NOT be Heaven without this sandwich.DIY Hand Made Valentine'sBefore my life changed forever, I was just crafting away, thinking that life would always be as great as it had been. If I had known what was ahead of me, I never would have wasted my Saturday night making these Valentine cards. I mean, I could have had that sandwich a day earlier! What was I thinking?Heart Felt Valentine CardAnyway, the good news is that I joined a Valentine Snail Mail event this year, so I’m sure the recipients will be happy I didn’t try that sandwich until Sunday. If they could taste the fabulousness that was that sandwich, they would not want these pathetic little cards. They’d ask why I didn’t send them a sandwich sample. Sorry, I’m not sorry. I ate it all.

I also had seen these envelopes on Pinterest (shocker), and thought I could re-create them a little easier. I used felt to create my own little felt envelopes (shown in first photo). Since I cannot fit a sandwich inside, I guess I’ll have to settle for a love note or two.

Happy Hearts Week!

Jump off the Carb Cliff

2.05.2015

12 Carb-Free Dinner IdeasI’ve always likened myself to that age-old saying, “Jack of all trades, master of none.” I mean, clearly I am a world class chef, an award-winning author, and a Grammy-winning singer. But there is one thing that I just cannot master: Photographing food. It’s the worst, I’m the worst. So, while you read this post, forgive my horrendous attempt at creating photographs of food you’d actually want to eat, and trust my opinion that the food is indeed edible, and in fact, quite delicious.

After we returned from our holiday vacation, B and I decided we needed to cut back on our diets. The guacamole and tortilla chips we gorged on in Mexico every day were just not going to cut it for our abs. Or lack there of. So I came up with the idea to cut out all processed carbs for a few weeks. No bread, rice, pasta, etc. Of course we still ate carrots, veggies, and I could never get rid of my salad dressing; but for the most part, we really took on this challenge. I thought I’d share some meal suggestions, in case you think you’d like to give it a shot. Take note: even though we cut out carbs, we still ate a LOT of food. I’m a fat-kid. No half sized portions work here. Double note: I HATE detailed recipes. So while I could have found much more intricate meals, I stuck to easy. This girl does not want difficult recipes after an 11 hour work day thank you very much.Carb-Free FoodsHere’s where you can stop reading if you’re totally not interested in jumping off the cliff that is carb-free. Just because I jumped off the cliff, doesn’t mean you have to follow. Your parents would be so proud.

Also, something worth mentioning. I don’t use oil in hardly anything I cook. I have an amazing non-stick pan, that allows me to forgo any sort of oil. So in Shauna terms, “saute” actually means “cook in a skillet.”

1. Essentially, chicken fajitas without the tortillas. I did not use fajita seasoning either, just sauteed peppers/onions/chicken in a skillet, served with a little chipotle sauce on top. Delicious (and even better with avocado)!

2. Taco salad, or Chicken Tostadas, without the tostada.

3. Baked Mahi-Mahi. I made an avocado salsa to top it off: avocado, chopped grape tomatoes, chopped red onion. Mix with lime juice.

4. Baked zucchini (side dish, serve with grilled chicken, fish, or steak). This recipe calls for parmesan, but I skipped it.

5. Stuffed Peppers. I  sort of  made up my own recipe for this, but there are tons online. I just used more meat, more veggies, and more tomatoes to substitute for the rice I typically use.

6. OMG. Baked Cauliflower and Broccoli (and Brussel Sprouts if you like them). This was a huge hit in our house. B doesn’t like these veggies normally, but when baked, he couldn’t get enough. Start with either of these two recipes: Cauliflower or Broccoli.

7. Side dish of sauteed veggies. Carrots, onions, zucchini. Serve with chicken, fish, or steak.

8. My famous favorite salad. Take a romaine lettuce heart, cut it in half. Sprinkle red onion, diced grape tomatoes, and avocado on top. And if you love it like I do, add cilantro too! We typically have one before every meal.

9. Pot roast. I made a roast like I always do, but skipped adding potatoes. Roast, carrots, celery, and onions all the way.

10. Side dish of mushrooms, zucchini, green peppers, and onions. Perfect with a steak (header photo).

11. One of B’s favorites: Steak roll-ups. If you’re an avid Pinterest-er, you’ve seen this pinned many times. But trust me, it’s fabulous. Try it. Side note: that blogger clearly is an amazing food photographer. Jealous!

12. Not pictured, but AMAZING. This is by far my most favorite new recipe. Shrimp with zucchini and tomatoes. I highly suggest it.

Because I cannot go an hour without eating something, we snacked on Greek yogurt, hard-boiled eggs, fruit, veggies, and almonds between meals. I typically cooked dinner for four, and then we each took a serving for lunch the next day.

Tell me, what is your favorite carb-free recipe?

To Be, or Not to Be: Anti-Valentine’s

2.04.2015

DIY Valentine Heart Strings BannerYou may be sick and tired of hearing about Valentine’s Day already. You may be one of those people who throw Anti-Valentine’s Day parties. And if you are, feel free to invite me to your party. I will bring lots of wine, tissues, and maybe even some cheeseburgers. Nothing says anti-Valentine’s Day like cheeseburgers. If you’re lucky I’ll bring over my man-shaped punching bag so you can take out your aggression over being single on something safe.

Although I am at a stage in my life where I actually enjoy Valentine’s Day, I spent plenty of them alone, hating the world. And men. Okay just men. I still loved other things about the world. Like the wine I drank to get over the men.

You also may not be Anti-Valentine’s Day; you may be like the current me. Give me any excuse to decorate and it’s already a party in my book. So if you’re more like the new me than the old me, here’s a very simple DIY project. Cheap too. What’s better than simple and cheap?
DIY Valentine Heart Strings Banner SuppliesAll you need for this project is some sort of thread/yarn/ribbon and felt hearts. I bought the red yarn in the Target Dollar Spot, but you could easily use something you have in your craft hoard. (I know I am not the only craft hoarder out there: I’ve seen that episode of Hoarders thank you very much). Michael’s has the box of hearts for $5, with 40% (no coupon required) this week. Just hot glue each heart onto the string and you’re done. You can have this completed in the time it would take you to pour a glass of wine while holding back your tears that you’re alone on this Hallmark holiday. DIY Valentine Heart Strings Banner

Your Life Witness

1.29.2015

Countdown to Valentine's Day Banner I’ve always wanted one of those…a witness to my life. Growing up, it wasn’t so much the “husband” title that I coveted, as much as it was having someone there to witness my life. To see my milestones, to record my smiles, to support my decisions. Before marriage, I was my own best witness. And if you ask my journal, I wasn’t the greatest witness. I failed to record the most important things, because I felt vain writing them on paper.

Then I met him. He became my best friend, my life partner, my protector, my hero, my love. He became my witness.

Valentine’s Day is most definitely a Hallmark holiday. It’s an excuse for flowers, chocolate, and love. But what people overlook is that it is also an excuse to show appreciation.

We are all so busy in our daily lives that sometimes we forget. We forget to tell them how much we love them. We forget to smile at them when they walk in the door. We forget to appreciate.

Countdown to Valentine's Day SuppliesThis project is about appreciation. It’s about memories and love. It’s an excuse. The best kind of excuse.

Countdown to Valentine's Day Banner SuppliesTo keep it short and sweet (you can find out more details/instructions from this post), you pick the best 14 experiences of the previous year, print the photos, write an explanation on the back, and stuff it in an envelope. This year, I spruced it up a bit with a burlap banner underneath.

Why yes, I do. 🤣🤣🤣

One of my favorite things we get to give our girls One of my favorite things we get to give our girls is perspective. To see new places. To meet different people. To experience cultures outside of their own.

Not so they grow up thinking one place is “better” than another — but so they grow up curious, grateful, and grounded. And the more of the world we see, the more thankful I become for home, for the freedoms we have, and for the life we get to build together.

I might be the world’s worst “influencer,” because I might be the world’s worst “influencer,” because I’m here to tell you this: you do not need a whole new wardrobe for vacation.

Social media makes it feel like every trip requires new outfits, a new summer closet, a new date-night dress…but honestly? It doesn’t.

I’m willing to bet you already have plenty of great options hanging in your closet. And instead of spending a bunch of money on clothes you’ll probably only wear once, maybe it’s enough to just wear what you already love.
One day, instead of hearing little feet running th One day, instead of hearing little feet running through the house all day, I’ll be leaving voicemails hoping they call me back when they have time.

The sticky fingerprints will wash away, the car seats will come out, bedtime routines will end, and the house that once felt so loud will get quieter little by little.

It’s strange how the things that exhaust you in the moment become the very things you ache for later. 🤍

Don’t get me wrong, if it were in the budget you better believe it’s worth it. I am not advocating for giving them LESS, I’m just advocating for staying within your families budget. And maybe if we see more of these easy little inexpensive gifts, we can make it more acceptable to gift within budget. Because that’s what it’s all about.

What’s that saying? It’s the thought that counts.
I’ve been seeing so many reels lately saying that I’ve been seeing so many reels lately saying that Mother’s Day is only for moms with small children. I couldn’t disagree more. To me, Mother’s Day is not just about me. It’s about the women who helped shape me, as a mother, a woman, a friend. It’s about my friends who help me be a better mother, even if they don’t have little kids themselves. It’s about my own mother, who is the biggest inspiration for me, to be a better mother myself. It’s about the many generations before me that allowed me to be a mother at all. It’s about every woman in my life that loves me and my girls as if they’re their own. That’s who I’ll be celebrating this Mother’s Day.
