Real Life Living on a Real Life Budget

DIY, Holidays!

Mommy Dearest.

5.10.2014

Easy DIY Cards for life loveAhhhh Mother’s Day. The inevitable holiday that stresses us all out over what to buy our mothers. Since they are one of the most important people in our lives, we want to get something special. However, if your mom is anything like mine, finding something special is impossible. My mom buys everything she wants, she has everything she wants, and she is always telling me she doesn’t want anything more. Great mom, thanks for making it easy.

To give you a little example of how hard my mom is to buy/make gifts for, I’ll give you a little insight into a past Mother’s Day gift I gave my mom. I had spent hours putting together a scrapbook filled with photos of the two of us, from my birth to the present. She opened the box, pulled out the book and without opening it, said: “Oh this is beautiful.” Then she put it down.

And didn’t pick it back up.

She had about as much use for that scrapbook as if I had given her cans of Spam. Although, to be honest, she would probably find something to make with the Spam. To be fair, I’m sure she eventually looked at the inside of the book when she found time…after she did her spring cleaning, held a garage sale, and then realized no one wanted to buy a book of photos of us. I’m sure she looked at it then. And to pat her on the back a little, if she had made something with that Spam, it would have been delicious. She’s an amazing cook.

I learned my lesson that year, and from that point forward I have always bought my mother’s gifts instead of making them. However, one thing I still make is her cards (because even if she doesn’t look at them, there hasn’t been too much time wasted). Besides, isn’t that what mothers always say anyway, “Just get me a card.” Or, the more cliche, “I don’t need anything besides your love and affection.” Duh mom. You already have that, let’s get a little creative. So for my mother, who is obviously reading this post (or who better be), please come up with a list of goods that you request for next year. Or better yet, get it ready for your birthday.

I don’t like to buy cards when I can make them for free. Especially given that I probably have more decorative/scrapbook paper than Michaels. I made two simple (but VERY time consuming) cards for my mother and B’s mom. I cut out my own heart (the old fashioned way, by folding a paper and cutting out half), and traced it with pencil onto my folded cardstock (I used one 8.5×11, folded it so it’s 5.5in instead of 11, then cut two 4in width cards). Then came the tedious part. I used a needle to punch holes around the heart line, probably about a 1/4 inch apart, or closer. Not all of them were even, so spacing doesn’t matter too much. When I went around the whole heart, I used my eraser and got rid of all pencil lines.

Then I started threading. Just like sewing, in and out between holes (that doesn’t sound good…). I tried to use every hole once, but some were skipped. It’s not too noticeable if you don’t miss two in a row.

Then came the stamp. I’m not a stamper, so I only have a few choices. I thought, “You Are Fabulous” was a good choice, because obviously my mother is fabulous (how would she have created such fabulous offspring if she wasn’t herself?). The card was muy simple, but the effort was destined for at least a small smile on her face. I mean, at least this time she doesn’t have to open it to see the effort.DIY Hand Sewn Heart Cards for Love or Valentine's DayOther than our moms, in our house we have a stepmom and grandmas to make cards for! I wanted to do something a little different for them (can’t have them comparing cards and thinking we made the same one for each of them now can we?). These were SUPER simple, and not tedious at all. As long as you have the ingredients, you can make this card in five minutes or less.

          Ingredients:

White Cardstock

Decorative Cardstock (mine is a floral pattern)

Twine

Some type of embellishment or sticker that can apply

Glue & ScissorsDIY Valentine's Day Cards or LoveI folded the cardstock in half and cut two four inch wide cards. I then cut the decorative paper to fit on the cardstock, and rounded the corners. Before I glued it down, I tied a piece of twine around it, and completed it with a bow (off centered). Glued it to the cardstock, and added an embellishment. Done and done. Because I didn’t go buy specific ‘Mother’s Day’ embellishments, I just picked any that could relate to the holiday.

Easy, simple, but special cards for special people (my grandma is just as fabulous as my mom). And for the record, I had a bakery deliver my mom’s favorite cake to her for Mother’s Day. So don’t let her tell you all she got was this card. 🙂

Sparklepants Turns 30!

5.05.2014

Birthday Layout Ideas // Birthday Mantle // One Birthday GIft for each day of the month!Dun-dun-dun….drum roll pleaseeeeeeeee!

Guess what day it is?! Guess what DAY IT IS?!?!? (No, it’s not Wednesday) It’s my birthday!! Well soon enough it will be. And I wouldn’t be any kind of fabulous if I only celebrated my birthday on my actual birthday, now would I? I try explaining this to my husband every year, but he still compares my birthday to the summer Olympics. Which is in essence, exactly what I want him to compare it to. Now if I could only get some of those swimmers in speedos to attend…

My birthday is the most important day of the year, but before you take my word for it, give me a second to explain. I don’t think my birthday should be the most important day in your year, but your birthday should most certainly be! It’s not ‘just another day’ – it is another year that you have lived, breathed, experienced. It is a celebration of YOU and everything you have accomplished. You have come so far! Just look around! Think of all the people in the world that would do anything for ONE more birthday, or one more birthday of a loved one. Don’t take things that are so precious for granted! My birthday is no different than yours, it’s just better to me (sorry, the truth hurts sometimes).

I cannot wait to start the real celebrations, in fact, they are starting in exactly six days. I have been waiting patiently. Okay so I’ve been waiting.

I was surprised this year a little (this is very hard to do, just ask my husband about his proposal). My brother in law and his girlfriend sent me a very large box with 15 smaller boxes inside. A gift for every day of May until my birthday! Now if this isn’t exactly the kind of celebrations that scream SPARKLEPANTS, I don’t know what is.

I had the idea to put together a “Birthday Mantle.” It would be perfect, as my birthday is in May, and hubby’s is in June (and what other notable holidays could I decorate for in those two months?!). I planned on a few things, photos of the birthday girl (me! – yes, I am that vain) on previous birthdays, a vase of candles, and various little fillers. I was especially fond of the “S” for Sparklepants….

Birthday Decoration Ideas // Birthday Mantle // Rae of SparklesI was pleasantly surprised when I received 15 small gifts to open! I ended up putting the gifts as the center in the mantle, and creating the piece around them. It adds excitement to the whole thing (because I get REALLY excited to open them each day!). It would be a little less cluttered without them, but they add such a fun dynamic, that I cannot remove them now!

Birthday Mantle Ideas // Birthday Gifts // Gift for Each Day of Birthday MonthI love my birthday mantle! Just keeps reminding me that the best day of the year is in ten days!! I plan on celebrating with the best of ’em. Then I’ll thank God for blessing me with another beautiful year!

Fiesta! Free Printable Cinco de Mayo Treat TagsI’m sure you’re all aware that today is May 5th…otherwise known as Cinco de Mayo. I’m not going to lie, I really don’t know what the real celebration is in honor of, although I love that there is a free day for celebration! A quick Google search gave me some information so I don’t make a complete fool of myself: “today the date is observed in the United States as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride.” Here in California, Cinco de Mayo is a huge celebration, and even though it is not my heritage, I’m using it as an excuse to celebrate!

I wasn’t going to make any treats for work for Cinco de Mayo originally, but….

On Friday I fell down the stairs at my apartment complex and essentially I was laid up all weekend. I was feeling a little restless last night, so I quickly put these little treats together. It was easy for me, because B’s favorite candy is Hot Tamales, and we had two bags full! Because one bag had individually wrapped candies, I had two different looks to my treats. The individual wrapped treats looked like this:

And the Hot Tamales I individually bagged looked like this:

I designed the little tags, printed them, cut them out and adhered them to different color cardstock. I used my scalloped scissors around the edges for more detail (like usual), and stapled them to each treat bag. You can print my design here: FIESTA!

Overall, I think they turned out really cute! And a perfect little snack size for my co-workers! Hopefully everyone shows up tomorrow for work, after all those margaritas and Coronas tonight! Okay so maybe it’ll just be me…bring me my sombrero!

High Five His Face.

4.29.2014

God Gives You the People You Need // What's Meant to Be We’ve all been there. Okay, well most of us normal people have been there (I say normal in the very lightest sense of the word). That moment when the person you were planning on marrying, raising babies with…or okay, maybe you were just planning on watching the next season of Friday Night Lights with…suddenly wants nothing to do with you anymore. Besides wine, ice cream, wine, cookies, wine, tequila shots, and more wine…there is not much you can do to heal a broken heart. It isn’t worse to watch someone else go through it (how dare you take away their tragedy!), but it does hurt to watch it happen to the people we love.

Recently, a friend that shall remain nameless, went through a similar situation to the described above. Except that it may have involved more wine, less raising of babies, and possibly some deviled eggs (Deviled Eggs are ahhhhmazing). I didn’t want to sit by and watch her feel horrible and upset, but what can you do? I didn’t want her to feel pitied, but I wanted to do something. I looked online for something to send (no woman should be sent flowers as a break-up gift, take note) but to no avail. No one has apparently come up with anything fun for cheering up a friend! Although I could have easily sent her a bottle of tequila and some limes, I just didn’t think it was creative enough coming from me! It had to be a little more thoughtful.

Enter my brilliant mind (okay so it’s not brilliant, but it’s at least a little creative). Since I was always making birthday boxes for friends, why not make a breakup box? That way it could be a little more fun than a card that could potentially make her cry. And then drink more wine.DIY Breakup BoxMy first step was decorating my USPS Flat Rate box (if you guessed that ahead of time, you know me too well). This time I used Modge Podge to not only put decorative paper around the inside, but I also printed out ‘Inspirational’ quotes and adhered them to the back and bottom of the box. Everyone can use good motivation, especially in these dire times.

Because every woman loves Ryan Gosling (except for me…I think I may be alone in this), I put in a little Ryan Gosling book that I found at Urban Spoon gift store. I also found cute little candy mints with a saying that made me laugh out loud, so it must have given her a good chuckle. “Sometimes people just need a high five. In the face. With a chair.” – Right?

I went to the Dollar Tree – no surprise there – and picked up some essentials: eye drops, lip gloss (for future kissing episodes), tissues, band-aids (for healing), and some of the candies shown below (Laffy Taffy’s, Swedish Fish, Gummy Worms, and Cry Babies). I also picked up a small bottle of alcohol, and some fun candies from a vintage candy store in our town: Good News candy bar (because she could use a little good news), the gummy frogs (pictured below), and candy cigarettes (she may just need a smoke).

I put together these cute little tags to add to the candy bags (Print them here: BreakUp Box). After printing, I adhered them to matching decorative paper, and used a scalloped scissor to cut them out (just added a little detail).

Men are Snakes – Gummy Worms

Stop Kissing Frogs – Gummy Frogs

When You Need a Good Laugh – Laffy Taffy

An Excuse for Tears – Cry Baby’s

There’s Plenty of Fish in the Sea – Swedish FishBreakup Box InsideOverall, I think the box turned out really cute and gave her a good laugh. Hopefully it reminded her that I am here for her and she is not alone (because we all need that reminder every once in a while). And hopefully she has been saving the corks from all the wine she is drinking…she does have a crafty friend after all. Is it too much to ask? 😉Breakup Box Treats

Listen. Social media tends to make traveling with children look glamorous, and the truth is, it usually isn’t. Are some kids professional travelers? Of course. But reality is that there’s always pitfalls and unexpected turbulence that you just have to mentally prepare for before you travel. And in the end? I promise you, it’s worth all the hassle.

One of my favorite things we get to give our girls One of my favorite things we get to give our girls is perspective. To see new places. To meet different people. To experience cultures outside of their own.

Not so they grow up thinking one place is “better” than another — but so they grow up curious, grateful, and grounded. And the more of the world we see, the more thankful I become for home, for the freedoms we have, and for the life we get to build together.

I might be the world’s worst “influencer,” because I might be the world’s worst “influencer,” because I’m here to tell you this: you do not need a whole new wardrobe for vacation.

Social media makes it feel like every trip requires new outfits, a new summer closet, a new date-night dress…but honestly? It doesn’t.

I’m willing to bet you already have plenty of great options hanging in your closet. And instead of spending a bunch of money on clothes you’ll probably only wear once, maybe it’s enough to just wear what you already love.

Don’t get me wrong, if it were in the budget you better believe it’s worth it. I am not advocating for giving them LESS, I’m just advocating for staying within your families budget. And maybe if we see more of these easy little inexpensive gifts, we can make it more acceptable to gift within budget. Because that’s what it’s all about.

What’s that saying? It’s the thought that counts.

It’s about my friends who help me be a better mother, even if they don’t have little kids themselves. It’s about my own mother, who is the biggest inspiration for me, to be a better mother myself. It’s about the many generations before me that allowed me to be a mother at all. It’s about every woman in my life that loves me and my girls as if they’re their own. That’s who I’ll be celebrating this Mother’s Day.
