What Do You Do?

4.23.2014

Appreciation Gift Idea // Free Printable // Rae of SparklesToday is Administrative Professional’s Day. Along with all the other holidays that are in celebration of me, I love this one too! It may just be a ‘Hallmark’ holiday, but I’ll take it anyway. Anything for a little ‘celebration.’

People ask all the time, “What is it that you do?” I’m sure you’ve been asked this question numerous times in your life. The interesting part about this question is its universal understanding. We all know the question is directed at our career. Not what we do for fun or as a hobby, but for a paycheck. What do you do every day in order to survive, to put food on the table, and to support your hobbies?

I am in the administrative field. Today is in celebration of me (someone quick tell my husband so he brings home flowers tonight). I have many friends who’d like to talk me into going back to school, getting a ‘better’ career, making more money. I have little to no interest. This is why: I have a good life. I may have a few days a year that I work overtime, or bring my work home with me, but for the most part, my off time is my off time. I get to live my life, work on my hobbies, spend my weekends with my husband (when he’s not working himself!). I love that I don’t have to worry about my job taking away from my real life. I never wanted that kind of career. Life isn’t about working 24/7 (although for some people it may be). For me, life is about Saturday and Sunday. Life is what I do with my time for ME. I work hard during my workday, and most days, that’s where it stays. At work. So before you judge someone with a ‘lesser’ career choice than yours, take a moment to think about what they’re choosing. It may not be your choice, but it may be something they’ve chosen. Not just something they are doing to get by.living-poster

The poster above is something I live by. I want to make the most of my life, not my living. I want to remember what it was that I did in my off time. No one is going to remember me by what I did on a daily basis at work (maybe if I was a famous surgeon or lawyer…way too ambitious for me), but people will remember what I stood for, how I lived my life, and all of my accomplishments along the way. Take time to create life outside of your career. What’s the worst thing that can happen?

Appreciation Gift Idea // Free Printable // Rae of SparklesBack to the point. Needless to say, on Administrative Professionals Day, I had to make a little something for the other assistants I work with (there are 28 of them!). I saw this really cute blog post from Our Best Bites with an adorable free printable (find it here, along with the how-to on the candy bars they created). I just changed mine up a bit because I didn’t want to spend the money to buy large candy bars for 28 people! Instead, I printed smaller versions, popped a hole in them, and tied them with curling ribbon to snack size candy bars. Everyone appreciated them, maybe not as much as a large candy bar, but hey, what they don’t know can’t hurt them! 🙂

Bunny Tails!

4.18.2014

Bunny Tails // Easter Treat Idea // Party Favors // Free Printable // Rae of SparklesAt this point I figure you realize I have a borderline obsession with holidays. It just gives me a reason to smile and who doesn’t love to celebrate?! I like to put a smile on other people’s faces, so holiday’s are almost just an excuse for me. If you’re a fan of Friends, this relates to Phoebe’s “no good deed is selfless.” I get just as much satisfaction from making these crafts as those who receive them get. Probably a little more, but who’s counting.

Easter is in two days (!!!!!!), and although we have no children at home, we definitely will have an egg hunt, with a surprise basket at the end. Well, my husband will. I may get flowers if I’m lucky!

I wanted to make a little something for my co-workers, hopefully to brighten their day a bit. Although to be honest, it is Friday so hopefully they’re all already having a great day. I saw a pin on Pinterest for “Bunny Tails” that I thought was adorable (No link or I’d definitely give credit), and I thought I’d recreate them for my co-workers. Because I was going to make 30 of these, I didn’t want something too expensive. A few dollars a piece definitely adds up, and I just didn’t want to spend that much money (See? Here my co-workers probably thought I was sweet…). These Bunny Tails were the perfect option. A bag of Little Debbie (or Hostess) mini donuts were only $1.99 – and the bag said there was about 20 inside (was actually 22 in each – my husband was excited for the leftovers). Lucy, our incredibly sweet, morbidly obese cat wanted to pose for a photo with the donuts (NO, I did NOT give her donuts. Tuna/chicken/turkey/ice cream maybe. But not donuts). And now that Lucy has officially made her Rae of Sparkles debut….be prepared for more appearances. She charges with food, so we’ll see how frequently she can attend.

Bunny Tails // Easter Treat Idea // Party Favors // Free Printable // Rae of SparklesI created these cute little tags, printed them, put two donuts in a little ziploc bag (Michael’s has these, and they are NOT expensive) turned out so cute and my co-workers loved having a few donuts this morning. Not to mention that for two donuts, there was only 110 calories, which I did indeed mention to several of my co-workers. You can find a PDF here, with a sheet of the tags for printing: Bunny Tails. Or you can just click on the JPEG below and use that to create your own sheet!

Oprah!

4.17.2014

Oprah

Within the past year or so, I made a conscious effort to be more grateful for everything in my life. I made a point to realize that every day is a blessing that I should be thankful for and I have started to notice a shift in my happiness. I do not feel that my life is that different from a typical life, I just treat ordinary experiences as blessings. I am blessed to wake up every morning, blessed to be married to my best friend, blessed to have a family and friends that I can count on always, blessed to have a cat that waits for me at the front door at night! Just blessed. If you start to treat each experience in life as a gift, your overall level of happiness will rise.  Being able to go out for dinner or spend the day by the pool are really just everyday things, unless you start to think of them as blessings (spending the day by the pool is DEFINITELY a blessing during the winter!!).

Sometimes I cannot believe the opportunities that I’m given. I feel so blessed on a daily basis in my life, that sometimes I worry it is inevitable that something bad is going to happen. However inevitable that really may be, I want to thank God every day for what I do have right now, and stop worrying about what will happen tomorrow. I will take advantage of the opportunities that arise and always be gracious they do.

Yesterday that opportunity was Oprah. I was fortunate enough to get a ticket to see Oprah interviewed at work yesterday (tickets were gone in four minutes!). To be honest, I wasn’t exactly expecting much. I have never been a huge Oprah fan and haven’t ever really watched her shows, with the exception of a few that had guests I really wanted to see. I didn’t expect to be moved or inspired during my lunch break yesterday, but that’s exactly what happened.

photo 6edit

When I graduated eighth grade, we were all given an award to describe our personalities (small private school). I was given the Harpo (Oprah’s production company) award and voted ‘Most Likely to Have Her Own Talk Show.’ What can I say, I guess I’ve always been a little outspoken. So when I took my seat in the auditorium (third row!!) yesterday, I was just expecting an interesting lunch break. Maybe I’d learn what I “could have been” if I followed my eighth grade prediction. I figured I would attend the interview and if it was boring, oh well. The interview was anything but. She was incredibly inspiring, motivating, and quite thrilling to be blunt. She encouraged students (majority of the audience) to strive to find their life’s purpose, and to build upon that purpose.  One of the best quotes I think she said during the interview is below:Oprah2

How true is that statement? I feel as a twenty-something young adult, I am constantly wondering what it is that I SHOULD do. I don’t spend enough time realizing that I already know so much of what I don’t want to do. I think a lot of people have this narrowed down when it comes to relationships; we all know what we don’t want in a potential partner. But how easily could that relate to our career, or even just life, as well? It may be tough or overwhelming to really know what it is that you want to do, but just thinking of everything you know you don’t want to do is a hell of an accomplishment.

So overall, yesterday was a true blessing. It came in the way of Oprah, and that’s just fine with me. I’m sure I’m not the first person to be inspired by something Oprah said, but I was definitely surprised. I took the opportunity to thank God for everything in my life, and I will try to illuminate the world! 🙂PicMonkey Collage

Chipboard Album

4.14.2014

Baby Boy Scrapbook Chipboard AlbumWe have a friend having a baby…okay we have FRIENDS having BABIES. Babies are everywhere, let’s be honest. I think since I’ve turned 27, babies are springing up faster than Wal-Marts. As long as none spring up here, I am A-Okay!

My real hobby is scrapbooking. I love to make books for my friends weddings and/or  babies. However, when they all started having babies, I couldn’t keep up. So the ones that reproduced first got lucky. The rest get stuck with something like this, a chipboard album. These are still really cool gifts, just don’t let the person getting this see the 20 page books I’ve made for the first to the finish line!

You used to be able to find chipboard albums all over the place. You can still find them at Michaels, and really any size and shape works. If you can find pre-packaged chipboard with paper and stickers, that’s even better! For the one pictured, I had to use a razor to cut each circle out. I started with a blank chipboard album (circle), and a paper pack for baby boys. That made it easy, all the pages matched, so I could add them all together. I used Modge Podge to adhere the paper to the base, and then used a razor to cut along the edges. I then just decorated each page, and tied ribbon around the clip holding them together. I also used an ink pad to distress the edges (because I am not perfect at rounding the edges, and it hides little mistakes well!). I used my paper pack and cut out the embellishments from some of the fun pages.

The best part about this album is that it’s easy to make, and is easy for your recipient to finish! They just have to put in their photos, and they’ll have an adorable little memory book of their baby! Or in our case, an adorable memory book for photos of our fat cat!Baby Boy Scrapbook Chipboard Album

So much of life is spent going, going, going. Waiting for the next stage. Telling ourselves, “Once we get through this, things will be easier.” Once the kids are older. Once life settles down. Once we have more time. But what if we’re missing the whole point? Because the moments we’re so eager to get through ARE the moments.

Today is the important stuff. The ordinary days. The messy days. The little conversations, the giggles, the routines, the chaos, the moments that don’t feel significant while we’re living them. We spend so much time wishing for the next chapter that we forget we’re already living one we’ll someday wish we could go back to.

So slow down.

Be here.
Pay attention.
Let the moment take as long as it needs to.

Because someday, these will be the days we miss.

Because someday I’m probably going to miss the paper scraps, the glue everywhere, the questionable color combinations, and the little masterpieces I had no idea what to do with. Let them make the ugly craft. Let them make a mess. Let them create something that looks nothing like what you had in mind.

But my days are always like that, and even though it’s exhausting and overwhelming at times, I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Even if I only have ONE moment like this a day, it’s one moment a day I could miss out on if they were in a traditional school.

So here’s to whatever choice you are making in regards to your kids education. What’s best for YOU is most important. And what’s best for us is this.

The difference? This isn’t just a container of slime
to squish around. The Slime Prank Lab by @CrunchLabs
turns it into an activity. We spent the afternoon mixing the slime, experimenting with different textures, and (of course) testing out the ridiculously funny booger and fart pranks. 🤣

My girls were completely entertained, and I loved watching them create, experiment, and laugh together. It feels like pure fun for the kids, but there’s actually some pretty cool science and engineering behind it all, plus Mark Rober walks you through even more with the QR code inside the kit.

Who in your family would be the first prank target?

A core memory I didn’t know I’d be making… This w A core memory I didn’t know I’d be making…

This weekend at church, my daughter got to light the candles for the first time. At the end of the service, when she went up on her own to extinguish them, proud tears dropped from my eyes. And as I looked around at others, I noticed I wasn’t the only one.

If you had asked me in my early to mid twenties, I wouldn’t have imagined how much this community, this faith, and these little traditions would come to mean to our family. There was a season of my life, long before I became a mom, where I drifted away from actively going to church. Now, getting to watch my girls grow up surrounded by faith, love, and a church family who knows them and celebrates them feels like such a gift.
