Real Life Living on a Real Life Budget

Birthday's, DIY, Party Planning

Phil Mickelson Pops In

6.18.2014

Wouldn’t it be nice if we could surprise our loved ones with exactly the thing they want for their birthdays? Yes. But in my case, impossible. Although my husband got a (much) less expensive version of the alligator belt that his idol wears, I could not get him the actual idol.

The Birthday Banner was cool, but not a lasting surprise. So in order to give B a little extra to look forward to, I added my crafting to one of his favorite people: Phil Mickelson. I would go as far as saying that my husband, my 34 year old husband, is the biggest Phil Mickelson fan in the world. He actually invited Phil to our wedding, with the hope that he might actually come. He rationalized this with the fact that Phil has his own jet, so he could “easily” make it to our Saturday night wedding in WI, since he was in a tournament in Chicago. I saw the flaws here, but I let him have his moment. As much as I’d like to think that when we said “I do” that day, it was the highlight of his life….I also know he was a little disappointed that Phil wasn’t there. I can’t lie, I was a little thankful that he wasn’t. Otherwise B would have had the first dance with Phil. No offense Phil, I love you too…but I did want to be the center of attention on my wedding day. I will still support him when he rewinds the Enbrel commercials so we can watch you again. And I will pretend that maybe it is possible that he has arthritis (like he claims), so he can feel more like you.

Anyway, I’m getting off track. Phil was in the U.S. Open the same weekend of B’s birthday. On Friday, when B realized that his “lifelong” dream of Phil completing the “Grand Slam” wasn’t going to happen on his birthday weekend (this year anyway), he was a little disappointed. He said (and I quote): “Phil doesn’t love me nearly as much as you do! He didn’t remember my birthday OR my wedding!” Well, I could have told you that smarty-pants. I’m sure Phil loves his fans, but he’s got nothing on this girl.

However, I had to show B that Phil DOES love him on his birthday, so I got a little creative and surprised him. I just Googled photos of Phil, then uploaded them to Picmonkey, and inserted comic bubbles into each photo. I cropped each photo as closely to his body as I could, then printed them on cardstock, and cut them out. Every photo had a little birthday greeting for him, and I hid them all over the house. Some were in plain view (on the TV) so he knew they were around, and others were hidden in cabinets and drawers.

B loved his surprises! He said he was glad Phil was finally supporting him, and I let him bask in the “glory” he was feeling.

And my personal favorite Phil was hidden on the toilet:photo 5-2

I honestly never thought I’d be the mom saying yes I honestly never thought I’d be the mom saying yes
to slime... but here we are.

The difference? This isn’t just a container of slime
to squish around. The Slime Prank Lab by @CrunchLabs
turns it into an activity. We spent the afternoon mixing the slime, experimenting with different textures, and (of course) testing out the ridiculously funny booger and fart pranks. 🤣

My girls were completely entertained, and I loved watching them create, experiment, and laugh together. It feels like pure fun for the kids, but there’s actually some pretty cool science and engineering behind it all, plus Mark Rober walks you through even more with the QR code inside the kit.

Who in your family would be the first prank target?

A core memory I didn’t know I’d be making… This w A core memory I didn’t know I’d be making…

This weekend at church, my daughter got to light the candles for the first time. At the end of the service, when she went up on her own to extinguish them, proud tears dropped from my eyes. And as I looked around at others, I noticed I wasn’t the only one.

If you had asked me in my early to mid twenties, I wouldn’t have imagined how much this community, this faith, and these little traditions would come to mean to our family. There was a season of my life, long before I became a mom, where I drifted away from actively going to church. Now, getting to watch my girls grow up surrounded by faith, love, and a church family who knows them and celebrates them feels like such a gift.
Hot take: We’ve convinced ourselves kids need bigg Hot take: We’ve convinced ourselves kids need bigger backyards, when what they really need is neighborhood kids.

I used to think about more square footage, more land, more privacy. Now? I’d rather my girls have friends they can run to than an acre they have to play on alone.

A bigger house isn’t always a better childhood. For us, built-in community has been worth more than an extra bedroom ever could be.

I know this won’t be everyone’s opinion, but I think for elementary-aged kids, having friends next door is more valuable than having a huge yard. Anyone else change their mind about what “dream home” actually means?

I’ll die on this hill: kids birthday parties SHOUL I’ll die on this hill: kids birthday parties SHOULD feel magical.

Before anyone comes at me, I’m not talking about spending thousands of dollars. I’m talking about picking a theme, hanging the decorations, baking the cake (or buying it and decorating at home), planning the games, and making your kid feel like the most important person in the world for one day.

That’s the stuff they’ll remember.

You don’t need a huge budget to make childhood feel special. Agree or disagree?
Even with the bathroom trips. 🤣 Listen. Social me Even with the bathroom trips. 🤣

Listen. Social media tends to make traveling with children look glamorous, and the truth is, it usually isn’t. Are some kids professional travelers? Of course. But reality is that there’s always pitfalls and unexpected turbulence that you just have to mentally prepare for before you travel. And in the end? I promise you, it’s worth all the hassle.

Why yes, I do. 🤣🤣🤣

One of my favorite things we get to give our girls One of my favorite things we get to give our girls is perspective. To see new places. To meet different people. To experience cultures outside of their own.

Not so they grow up thinking one place is “better” than another — but so they grow up curious, grateful, and grounded. And the more of the world we see, the more thankful I become for home, for the freedoms we have, and for the life we get to build together.
