Easy Bee-Themed Baby Shower

2.12.2014

Bee Themed Baby Shower // Favor Ideas // Honey Sticks // Free PrintablesI really dislike baby showers. I don’t see the point of sitting around watching someone else open as many gifts as they can, all while “oohing” and “ahhhing” for their sake. That being said, I really like decorating for parties, so at least I get some enjoyment out of it! We held a simple shower for a woman at work, and had a very small budget to make it look halfway decent. So I made everything myself!

I started with the theme: Bees! Because we don’t know the gender of the baby, it was a cute idea. “What Will It Bee?” I figured anything yellow would work, so we picked up some simple snacks. Yellow lollipops, yellow cookies, and yellow Starbursts.

Then I got my craft on.

I made these cupcake toppers (easily) on Picmonkey.com. I just printed, cut them out, and glued them to a yellow piece of cardstock. I used a scalloped scissor to add extra flair, but if you don’t have one, it is not necessary.Bee Themed Baby Shower // Favor Ideas // Free PrintablesThe Mommy-to-Bee banner was also very easy. I designed the pieces, and put it all together in a free printable for you as well. Just print it, cut it out, and string together with some yellow ribbon. You can print it here.

I made the honeycomb backdrop, you can find the info on how to do this here.Bee Themed Baby Shower // Favor Ideas // Free PrintablesI also made little signs to place on the tables, for the gift table, and for the desserts. You can print them all here. I printed two of each, taped them together, and made simple table tents out of them. Maybe you’ll get more creative!

And my favorite part! I put together little honey stick party favors. I ordered them on Amazon, 100 for about $20. I printed little tags, cut them out with the scalloped scissors, hole punched each tag, and tied them to the stix with twine. You can print my tags here.See the image below for a visual:Bee Themed Baby Shower // Favor Ideas // Honey Sticks // Free PrintablesAll together it made for a really cute baby shower. Although I had to watch all the gifts being opened, I gained some satisfaction from a job well done. Added bonus, the guest of honor as well as all the employees LOVED the decorations! 🙂

DIY Backdrop: Honeycomb

2.12.2014

DIY Honeycomb backdropThis is a fairly easy, but very tedious craft. When I started putting together a bee-themed baby shower, I thought this was a really cute backdrop idea for the snack table (it is also very cheap, which I love!). Beware: This project is not for the perfectionists! It can be very difficult to get them the exact same shape, with the exact same spacing. I had to shelf my own craziness for this one.

You will need:

  • One large piece of foam board
    • This can be any size you’d like, or you can use cardstock as well
  • As many old magazines as you can find!
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Hexagon Tracer

First things first. Decide how large you want your hexagon, and print it to use as a tracer. You can easily use Google to find a hexagon. Then you’ll need to just start looking through old magazines for the color of  your choice. All mine fell into the yellow tones, but you can choose any color, or combination of colors. The more unique pictures you can find, the more unique your board will be.

After you have what you think is enough (trust me, it is not enough), start tracing and cutting out your hexagons. My board used over 150 full hexagons, as well as many “sides/ends” for the fillers.

Start placing your cut-outs on the board, and glue as you go! One word of advice: Don’t place too many without gluing, because one small breeze blows them all over the place (think pets…kids…etc.). It will take a while…a few hours at least…but you’ll have a really cool final project!

DIY Countdown to Valentine’s Day!

2.03.2014

DIY Countdown to Valentine's Day - Valentine's Day project for Husband

I’m always on the lookout for cute little crafts to make my husband for the holidays, and this was perfect! I found some pins on Pinterest that I liked, and kind of put a little spin on them. I found this card book on one of my favorite sites, “The Dating Divas” and went to work.

I changed it up a little to be envelopes with my 14 favorite memories of the past year. A “countdown” to Valentine’s Day!

You will need:

  • Scissors
  • 14 sheets of paper (8.5×11 or 12×12)
  • Glue
  • 14 of your favorite photos
  • Free printable from site above (or make your own)

DIY Countdown to Valentine's Day - Valentine's Day project for Husband

First things first. You will need to sit down and think of your favorite memories of the past year. Some of my photos were not the actual memory, but they could describe the memory. Such as my first one (pictured), I used a photo from one date night and wrote about how much I enjoy our Date Nights.

Then I needed to make the envelopes. I searched and searched online to find a good DIY envelope template. You can find your own if you’d like, otherwise this one will work. You will have to adjust the size to fit your photo inside. This was the easiest envelope I found. Then however you’d like, with stickers/pen/or a Cricut, you’ll need to number all your envelopes.

Once you have all your envelopes made, you just need to attach a memory to the back of your photo, put it in the envelope, and ta-da! You have a countdown to Valentine’s Day! I hung mine on February 1st, so he gets to open one envelope every day until Valentine’s Day! Gives him a little something to look forward to!

I just finished reading an uplifting novel by Mitch Albom (which of his novels are not uplifting?), “The First Phone Call from Heaven.” If you’d like, you can read my review on the book here.

Happy Thursday!

If there’s anything I’ve learned in this life, it’ If there’s anything I’ve learned in this life, it’s to SLOW DOWN.

So much of life is spent going, going, going. Waiting for the next stage. Telling ourselves, “Once we get through this, things will be easier.” Once the kids are older. Once life settles down. Once we have more time. But what if we’re missing the whole point? Because the moments we’re so eager to get through ARE the moments.

Today is the important stuff. The ordinary days. The messy days. The little conversations, the giggles, the routines, the chaos, the moments that don’t feel significant while we’re living them. We spend so much time wishing for the next chapter that we forget we’re already living one we’ll someday wish we could go back to.

So slow down.

Be here.
Pay attention.
Let the moment take as long as it needs to.

Because someday, these will be the days we miss.

They don’t need to match your house. They don’t need to be Pinterest-worthy. They don’t need to be made with a neutral color palette and a Cricut. They just need to be theirs.

Because someday I’m probably going to miss the paper scraps, the glue everywhere, the questionable color combinations, and the little masterpieces I had no idea what to do with. Let them make the ugly craft. Let them make a mess. Let them create something that looks nothing like what you had in mind.

But my days are always like that, and even though it’s exhausting and overwhelming at times, I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Even if I only have ONE moment like this a day, it’s one moment a day I could miss out on if they were in a traditional school.

So here’s to whatever choice you are making in regards to your kids education. What’s best for YOU is most important. And what’s best for us is this.

The difference? This isn’t just a container of slime
to squish around. The Slime Prank Lab by @CrunchLabs
turns it into an activity. We spent the afternoon mixing the slime, experimenting with different textures, and (of course) testing out the ridiculously funny booger and fart pranks. 🤣

My girls were completely entertained, and I loved watching them create, experiment, and laugh together. It feels like pure fun for the kids, but there’s actually some pretty cool science and engineering behind it all, plus Mark Rober walks you through even more with the QR code inside the kit.

Who in your family would be the first prank target?

A core memory I didn’t know I’d be making… This w A core memory I didn’t know I’d be making…

This weekend at church, my daughter got to light the candles for the first time. At the end of the service, when she went up on her own to extinguish them, proud tears dropped from my eyes. And as I looked around at others, I noticed I wasn’t the only one.

If you had asked me in my early to mid twenties, I wouldn’t have imagined how much this community, this faith, and these little traditions would come to mean to our family. There was a season of my life, long before I became a mom, where I drifted away from actively going to church. Now, getting to watch my girls grow up surrounded by faith, love, and a church family who knows them and celebrates them feels like such a gift.
